Molly!!!!! The dream - she started her career in the buying office at Barney’s in the 90s, then went to Céline under Phoebe Philo, and now runs ByGeorge, a true fashion institution in Austin, and where I got a taste for the retail world.
Molly and I talked about finding your style influences in the pre-internet era, discovering new brands, identifying the things that make you the most you, AND! I forced her to talk about this, but transitioning your hair to natural silver. Hers is GORGEOUS. Molly prefers to stay behind the scenes (like a true OG) so I’m very VERY grateful she was willing to come on with me and talk about her career and herself. You must watch.
AND! Here are her favorite things:
“The gist is that at my age I kind of have my "thing" down. I shop both women's and men's and go for quality over quantity. I do pick up wild, really special pieces - I can tell they're for me when they almost make me faint. Somehow they work with everything else.”
1: “I love a not boring pencil skirt and have so many iterations. This one is from Diotima (I love Rachel!), and I have a great striped pareo from Zankov (love Henry!) that I'll be wearing constantly in market later this month.”
2: “A men's vintage watch - my favorite is my father's old rolex oyster perpetual that my mom gave him - it has an inscription on the back. I'll pass it down to my nephew when he's old enough to take care of it.”
3: “ A men's blue striped shirt - I can never have too many. I have an entire section in my closet and they all work - old Céline, Boy (remember Band of Outsiders?!), Bottega Veneta, Maria McManus, Loewe, Dries, Comme, etc etc etc.”
4: “ A cropped kick pant - this silhouette has always worked well for me, and like blue striped shirts, I have a million pair - High Sport, old Céline, and Maria McManus make my favorites.”
5: “I love flat or flat-ish shoes. I'm waiting for these amazing shoes from PP to arrive at ByGeorge - the chicest granny look on the planet. I'm also living in a pair of flat Dries Van Noten sandals I picked up at their Paris store last summer, and on the weekends I'm always in Birkenstocks. I can't resist a slipper.”
6: “Tailored jackets - Women's, Men's - I love them all. I buy some as a suit, but have many solo jackets. They work with everything and sort of pull an outfit together, especially if I'm leaning really casual (see vintage levi's!)”
7: “Men's pajamas - I have sets I actually sleep in, but mostly I have them to wear out, especially pajama bottoms! Sebline makes the most exquisite shirts and pajamas - I'll be stocking up when we get our delivery at ByGeorge”
8: “This bag from The Row - more chic granny.”
9: “Vintage selvedge 501's - stacks and stacks!”
I FORGOT ONE VERY IMPORTANT ONE!!!!
10: “Eres string bikini - during the summer this is what I change into when I get home, and it's what I'm wearing when I dip at Barton Springs on Sundays. Throw on a pareo skirt, a men's striped shirt and birkenstocks, and I'm ready for brunch.”
That’s it!
