Golf Clothes for Weenie Dogs

Crafting a vibe with The Selby.
1

I knew about Todd Selby (as in, The Selby) way before I knew Todd Selby, so I think the first time I met him (he’s married to one of my best buddies, Danielle Sherman of Sherman Field), I think I was weird and nervous and a little early-internet starstruck.

Danielle is so beautiful and chic and elegant and minimal, and then Todd is like in a cat t-shirt and purple crocs and just super duper friendly and warm and both of them honestly adopted me and my family, and our kids all love each other, and we go to each other’s houses, and man, what a lucky girl I am to be in their orbit.

But Danielle and I always laugh because she and my husband are so similar (minimal, austere, careful), and Todd and I are so similar (impulsive, we like stuff and mess and crazyness) that it’s like a perfect mirror image of our relationship dynamic playing out in front of our eyes. He and I are both do’ers rather than planners and when we all hang it’s fun to talk about all of our new ideas and things we want to do.

Todd has the most unique sense of style - like a mash up of Nickelodeon kitsch with vintage Americana with SoCal I don’t know what with airbrush t-shirts and drawings - one time I went to their house and I was having a really bad day, so to cheer me up Todd started showing me all the weird things in his closet - he has a Michael’s store vest, and all this crazy shit, meanwhile Danielle is so precise and it’s just the best.

We get into all of this in our chat, but one thing that really drives him and his work (order his books, they’re gorgeous!) is his love of collections and collectors - “collecting collectors” helps him keep his collecting tendencies at bay, which I really resonate with. We also talked about the need to having a “vibe lair” a term we coined on the spot, especially when you have really strong aesthetic impulses that clash with your partner’s.

This one was a real blast, and Danielle makes an appearance, it’s a great hang with real insight into how to make it as a photographer, and how to make your style and your impulsiveness your career. It can be harnessed!

And here are some of Todd’s favorite things:

1: A great example of the chalkware we talked about.

2: The neon guy in Austin - Magnolia Cafe! The best!

3: Todd’s favorite cheese grater.

4: Todd’s favorite rice cooker.

5: The guys who made Todd’s amazing custom cowboy boots with the Kool-Aid man.

6: Todd’s newest book! He didn’t ask me to put this in here but it’s a gorgeous book and makes an excellent gift.

That’s it!

Your friends,

Laurel & Todd
