Seeking dimension & friction - a live convo with Amy Smilovic

The style visionary on a realistic approach to dressing + finding your personal modifier.

Ok, I say this every week, but you know - it’s true. This week’s Your Friend, Laurel is excellent. If you’re not already familiar with

/ Amy Smilovic/ Tibi - well, you’re welcome. As a source of wisdom for personal style and style-ing, it doesn’t get much better than Amy. Her whole philosophy of getting dressed with principles in mind, and a “modifier” (hers is humor) will change the way you think about shopping and getting dressed. She is an icon, and I still kind of can’t believe I had her on my corner of Substack. Amy, I love you.

Listen to our chat, count how many times I say “tits” or “titties” and tell me in the comments.

Here’s some stuff she likes:

1: “I despise the notion of buying only colors that flatter you - that's what self tanner is for - this lets me wear pale yellow. All good.” St. Tropez self tanner, $44

2: “These shorts - kitschy and from Mohawk General - I love shopping men’s.” Kartik Research, $325

3: “My initials here at Foundrae.” Foundrae, from $3,200

4: “For inspiration.” The Creative Act: A Way of Being, by Rick Rubin

5: “My friend just got this watch and I am so intrigued with a gold watch right now - super big - interesting.” Breitling

6: This guitarist, [Gerard Cousins], it’s all I’m listening to when I write.”

7: “This from Tibi of course.” Tibi blazer, $665

8: The Dress Rehearsal on HBO

9: I want to learn about wines - and I want to do it with people I trust….”
