When I was younger and was looking for attention, I’d wear ANYTHING. The louder, sparklier, brighter, the better. I had very eclectic style, and sometimes I look back and can’t believe I was taken seriously in some of the shit I wore. Then, after kids, everything became much more streamlined and minimal. I sort of lost myself and wanted to be chic, chic, chic. The “wanted to be” phrase is a red flag for me. I’ll never be a head-to-toe Row gal, I’ll never be Skandi anything, I’m not quiet luxury, I’m not any one thing - it’s not natural to me. None of those things are bad, it’s just not the way I dress, and I don’t think it’s the way most people dress. I take what I like and leave the rest. Actually after writing this and putting together the looks, it has unintentionally become a bit of an ode to Dries. I will always be a Dries girl.
Now that I’m a bit older and not “wanting to be” anything other than myself, I’ve found my way back to wearing a lot of color. For me, it mostly looks like solids in kind of off hues. No real jewel tones or super familiar colors (beyond red), but lots of color. I love color! And if I’m allowed to toot my own horn, I think I’ve developed a nice sense of it, and a nice sense of how to make color interesting AND wearable - to make it feel as effortless as a neutral. (And, if you just want to shop the edit, you can do that here.)
THE SHIRT
This great shirt is from TWP, I wore it to co-host the store’s opening this week in LA. When I first saw it I was like…wowza, that’s a color! Sometimes I still get a little stuck in my head and only imagine wearing color with denim, but I’ve learned that denim is one of the worst pairings for me with color. It makes the color stand alone, making it that much more of a statement, meaning more people will be like, oooOOooOo look at you in color! My goal is to always look interesting and like I’m having fun, but not to have anyone comment excessively on what I’m wearing.
