Earlier this week, I sent a newsletter about personal style, dressing emotionally, and trying to stay away from some of the samey-samey-ness that’s arrived since the advent of social media. And I got a comment that really stuck with me - in a good way.
I wholeheartedly agree. I think maybe one thing that didn’t come through completely in my previous post was that the main thing, in my opinion, in making style good is making it personal. The sticky bit that I feel a bit bummed out about is a sense of copy + paste for outfits. There’s so much style content out there (and yes, I realize the hypocrisy of writing this as a style writer) and I know the majority of people don’t give as big of a fuck about their clothing as I do, and most people just want to know how to look good without agonizing over it every morning. And man, I feel that too.
Someone doesn’t have to be totally out there and zany to be interesting. Costumery is the opposite of the goal, in either direction. And it made me think about the minimalists whose personal style is TERRIFIC and NOT AT ALL BORING and what makes it so superlative.
