Monday Snack: It's my birthday week and I'll wear age appropriate comfy stuff if I want to
Little tidbits from around the internet
Yes, it’s my birthday week. And as I inch closer to 40, I’m really starting to feel it. Last weekend on a playdate with some of my kids’ friends and their parents whom I adore, I tried to swing next to my daughter for about five seconds. Within one back and forth on the swing, my vision was spinning, stomach churning, and I could feel a headache coming on. Age, we all agreed, is at fault. It makes you nauseated beyond belief if you so much as try and swing on a swingset.
And so today are things that have added comfort to my life. Things that coddle me, and make me feel supported and happy and secure but not aged.
MEN’S FRINGE SILK SCARF
I spent most of my time in New York for Fashion Week wearing this little vintage men’s silk scarf with fringe. It’s not as ladylike as a small square scarf or one from Hermes, and I find it much easier to wear. It’s not as bulky as a big ass square silk scarf, and I like to wear it double looped with the ends tucked into my sweater or button down. It’s carrying me between seasons, but also makes me feel soft and taken care of, AND it covers my neck from the sun. Here’s a vintage one I love from Etsy, and another, and another.
BALLET FLATS WITH ARCH SUPPORT!!!
When I was little, my mom and other women I love would tell me to protect my feet. Not to run around NYC like a maniac in crazy heels. Of course, I did, and of course, now I’m paying for it. My feet hurt, man. And as much as I love the look of delicate, dainty little super mega flat flat flat flats, if there’s no arch support my feet and back throb by the end of the day. Birdies emailed me recently to gauge my interest in making them some Instagram content, and so they sent me shoes, and I have to say - I am a convert. For a super subtle, chic, elegant, classic black ballet flat, this is it for me. It holds up my arch, and is also padded inside - I sometimes get this thing where if I wear shoes with no cushion for too long the second toe on each of my feet goes numb….so anyway, I need comfortable shoes that don’t obviously look like comfortable shoes. Birdies, $130
SOFT PANTS SOMETIMES
SOMETIMES! I do enjoy a soft pant in a hard pant setting. I did a whole thing last week on wearing pants, and I treat my softpants like trousers and just sub them in sometimes. There’s something really comforting about being able to move about freely, and having a very luxurious swish when moving throughout the world. I like these Comme Si ones because they have boxer button details, but also this rich cornflower blue reminds me of some of my favorite looks from the AW24 Miu Miu collection. The dries are just heaven. I love them also with the matching shirt, but for a regular day I’d go with these and a huge oversized striped button down shirt. Comme Si pants, $165 ; Dries van Noten pants, $1,015
A GIANT CASHMERE RUGBY POLO
Guest In Residence sent me the sweater here on the left as a gift, and as soon as I put it on I felt a deep yes. It feels amazing, looks cool, and goes with soft pants (it would be very cute with those blue Comme Si pants) and hard pants (I wore it this weekend with jeans). It comes in two other colorways, but the lime/dark green is my favorite. Guest in Residence, $495
AN IN-SHOWER MOISTURIZER THAT I LOVE
I finally got the hint about taking care of my body skin (something I’ve neglected for most of my life), and I love this Uni body serum, but now I’ve added this Hanni Splash Salve stuff in the mix when I shower, and I’m starting to feel less itchy and alligator-y. You scoop it out in the shower and rub it all over your body, then pat dry when you get out and your skin will be mega soft and kind of sexily dewy. It also has barely any fragrance, so I like that as well. Hanni, $34
A SWEETIE PIE LAYERING PIECE
I’m partial to wearing soft little cotton layers under everything, usually in place of a bra (I’m very flat chested), and right now I can’t resist this pointelle version by Leset. It’s sweet and classic, but also sexy? It reminds me of something you’d wear under your fleece pullover and sweatshirt, but also something you could wear with an itty bitty mini skirt to feel like a horny babe. Truly multi-purpose! Leset, $88
AND THERE WE ARE! The bigger letter from me is coming on Saturday this week.

Laurel
