Ta-da! Life! Ebbs and flows, and right now for me it’s doing everything.
For years I’ve toyed with the idea of striking out on my own, freelancing, consulting, seeing where things go and what happens. And now, it’s (mostly) happening. My role at ByGeorge is shifting to Editor at Large, and I’ll still be working on our major seasonal campaigns, and still in love with the world of BG, still the store’s biggest fan. But principally, I’m a free agent.
So what does that actually look like?
Creative direction and styling, general consulting for fashion & beauty brands/things, personal styling and shopping, maybe some writing, maybe some silly things like a little capsule collection of perfect things (manifesting that!), probably a lot more newsletters. I’m imagining fun and creativity and nice people and all different sorts of things with all different sorts of people, so basically, a dream. I'm going to figure it out as I go, I guess, and feel my way through the forest.
And it’s exciting! But also scary. Mostly exciting.
I was talking to my friend Carly the other day about this - going out on your own - and when you work for a brand, or a thing, there’s something to shield yourself behind. Like, I’m doing this thing FOR someone else, so it’s me but not really me. But now, I guess, it’s really just me!
So here we go!
And since it’s just me, a few shopping picks that are just things I’ve seen while searching that I’ve loved.
1. This wallpaper! Perfect for Phoebe’s room. Little Cabari, $280/roll
2. What a gorgeous book. The photography is so beautiful, I had this saved as a possible guy gift earlier this year, and can’t seem to make myself close that tab. Remote Experiences: Extraordinary Travel Adventures from North to South, $60
3. Man, I love Tory Burch. This necklace! My dream sweet spiral shell necklace. So beautiful. Tory Burch, $398
4. I love a ballet flat, especially in this color, and especially with an ankle tie! So special. And on sale! Molly Goddard, $315
5. What a lovely pair of chunky socks. A dream pair of socks! Collina Strada, $42
6. I actually may have posted this vest before, but I have a navy, men’s sweater vest, and even I can’t believe how often I wear it. So good over a button down and Wranglers. J.Crew, $128
7. A gorgeous dress! The back is so pretty too. I love the high neck and how unadorned it is. And again - on sale! Three Graces London, $196
8. And again! Another perfect, simple dress on sale! With a beautiful back! AND! Made in a sustainable viscose that was made from wood pulp! OK! Another Tomorrow, $297
9. This is the sort of thing that I never feel like my home is pulled together enough for, but it is really beautiful and I love it, and maybe if I had it my home would be pulled together enough for something like this. Marloe Marloe, $265
10. THESE TORY BURCH PANTS! They are so silly, but also fucking chic. Imagine these with that sweater vest and a pair of flip flops! UGH I love them!!! Tory Burch, $598
11. And then here, what a sweet woven tote. I love the idea of something summery like this being worn in the dead of winter with a heavy coat and scarf and the whole thing. So good. Cesta Collective, $695
And that’s it! That’s my news! Here I go out into the universe!
I love you!
Your friend,
Laurel
