We’re still in the desert following the fires in Los Angeles. It’s been more than a week since they started, and from what I hear, donations are slowing down - so I’m putting the links here again - here is the master spreadsheet of GoFundMes for Black families who were displaced by the Eaton fire, and here is the giant spreadsheet of GoFundMes for people impacted by both Eaton and Palisades fires. Things are very much still fucked in Los Angeles because of the fires, and people are very much stepping up and doing amazing things to help their neighbors. It’s both heartbreaking and heartwarming - I guess that’s what they call bittersweet. Even if it’s just $5, many of these GoFundMe’s haven’t reached even 30% of their goal, and a little bit really does go a long way, and means SO MUCH to so many people. So while I’m going to give you some shopping options, I urge you to consider donating to one of these families, many of whom lost every single thing they have. My son’s preschool teacher is 78% to her goal - let’s see if we can get her to 80%?
THE STUFF I’VE BEEN WEARING FOR A MONTH STRAIGHT
On December 19th, we left LA for Austin to be with my parents for Christmas. We went back to LA on the 27th and then went to Palm Springs with my best friend, Emily, on the 30th. We came back to LA on January 2. Then, I tested positive for Covid, so I didn’t unpack. The fires broke out on the 7th and we evacuated, and on the 8th we were back in the car going to the Palm Desert again. I didn’t significantly unpack and repack my suitcase between any of these trips, so I’ve been using the same set of clothes for roughly the last four weeks - which I don’t mind, and I’m very lucky to have the things I do have. However, it has made it that much more clear to me what is truly useful in my closet, and what is….extra. The need to have vs the nice to have. Here’s the handful of stuff I have been relying on most heavily these last few weeks (besides these underwear and this bra - both of which are….A+++++).
COMME SI BUTTON UP
I packed two of these, though I probably really only need one. They’re great on their own, or worn under a sweater or sweatshirt with the collar and bottom hem peeking out. Comme Si, $275 (I wear a large)
LONG SLEEVE TEE SHIRTS
This sounds stupid, but I feel like I just found out about long sleeve tees. It’s not super warm in the desert, and wasn’t really in Austin either, but also not THAT cold, and these are genius as a base layer. They also look cute on their own, but right now that extra bit of cuddlyness is really what I need. LEFT: Leset, $88 (I wear a medium) RIGHT: AYR, $135 (I like the large, but could definitely go with a medium)
THIS CASHMERE SWEATER
This has been a real treat - the cut of it is perfect, neither too boxy nor too fitted, too long nor too cropped. It’s the ideal dark navy blue, and is super soft and in my experience, Lisa Yang sweaters don’t really pill. I’ve been living in this - it feels like a hug. I wear the size 0. Lisa Yang, $590
GRANDPA PAJAMAS
I only brought one pair of jeans, but somehow packed two pairs of old man pajamas (I LOVE matching top and bottom long sleeve long pant pajamas). I definitely don’t need both, but I appreciate having clean jammies every night. LEFT: Alex Mill x Schostal, $295 RIGHT: Olivia von Halle, $435
A LITTLE BIT OF WORKOUT STUFF
I’ve worked out *twice* in the last four weeks, but I’ve been happy to have these things to wear when I can’t stand to put my jeans or jammies on again. I love Left on Friday’s workout stuff - it’s unbelievably soft, doesn’t get see through when you bend over, and doesn’t have any humiliating straps or cutouts or scrunchy bands that go up your buttcrack. Left on Friday leggings, $120 Bra top, $70
THIS GREAT SWEATSHIRT
A truly great, cozy sweatshirt two ways: the Donni one is kind of soft and oversized, and the Richer Poorer is more fitted and structured. I packed both. LEFT: Donni, $184 (I wear a large) RIGHT: Richer Poorer, $76 (I wear a medium)
MY DENIM SOULMATE
Beloved jeans! Sweet beautiful perfect Wranglers, I love them so much. I buy the pre-washed Indigo version (zero stretch, pure dark indigo denim) and wear them in for years and years. The sizing is weird, so you really have to take your measurements and go off that. Wrangler, $50
EASY SNEAKERS
I wish I brought some Birkenstocks, but I really kind of just have these and one very random pair of sandals. I also wish I’d brought my slippers to wear in the house (the greatest slippers of all time), but what are you gonna do. New Balance, $90
THIS SEXY BUT NOT TOO BLACK SWIMSUIT
Ok so mine isn’t red, but this is the suit, and I LOVE it. It has the thinnest most delicate little straps, and is so soft and comfortable. It shows my buttcheeks a little more than I’d like, but also maybe I should get over it and just show some cheek. Lido, $190

Thank you for keeping up with writing here on Substack, it's such a joy to see your picks and get a slice of your taste! I really love that workout set, I bought i to the whole "colourful workout clothes" a little too hard a few years ago and now I'm a full rainbow every time I hit the gym
Donated to your son’s teacher! Thank you for sharing 💕
