Here we are, in the most glorious dead week between Christmas and New Year. I hope you have nothing to do but read and forget which day of the week it is.
GREAT BOOKS
These are some of my favorite things I read this year - I also asked for on Instagram, and a lot of these picks have been seconded and thirded.
All Fours: Unsurprisingly, this was the unanimous favorite. I’m about three quarters of the way through it, and I would also say it’s my top pick from 2024. I can’t really describe it, but if you’re in your 30s/40s and a woman, or know a woman, you should read it/you will probably love it. Every woman I know recognizes herself in this. It’s both weird and familiar. You’ve probably read it but if you haven’t, you should.
Demon Copperhead: Another mass fave, I also loved this. It’s a coming of age story about addiction in Appalachia, and it is un-put-downable.
Big Swiss: It’s a good moment for weird fiction for and about women, this falls into that category. I fucking LOVED it.
Liars: Another great piece of weird fiction for and about women. I read this in like, a day and a half.
What It Feels Like For A Girl: I didn’t read this, but it was recommended by someone whose taste I trust 100000%. It’s a trans woman’s memoir of what it was like coming of age in the early 00s in England. It’s next on my list.
Circe: Keeping with the theme of books by women, I read this a few years ago and LOVED it, and a good friend read it this year and reminded me of how great it is. It’s the story of Circe from Greek Mythology told from her POV. The writing is incredible.
Long Island Compromise: Also on my list! I loved Fleishman Is In Trouble (did not love the show), but I’m very very excited to dive into this. Another female author!
My greatest wish for myself, therefore my greatest wish for you, is that you may find several uninterrupted hours to read this week.
And now for the sale stuff…
MYTHERESA
1: A gorgeous leather coat from Co, this is a dreamy forever coat! Co, $1,494 (was $2,135)
2: Another perfect thing to wear until it falls apart - this beautifully tailored burgundy blazer from Tove. Available in a complete size run! Tove, $1,127 (was $1,610)
3: I loooooove Jil Sander - the best materials, the most beautifully made things - this shirt jacket the thing nobody thinks they need but then they end up wearing it all the time. It’s a great buy. Jil Sander, $750 (was $1,250)
4: Ok sure, this isn’t a seasonally appropriate purchase, but you’ll wear this cotton midi skirt all spring. It’s a great blank slate. Khaite, $590 (was $1,180)
5: How’s this for a personality coat? I love the green plaid, but love the red polo logo even more. Very preppy. Polo Ralph Lauren, $451 (was $645)
6: Another non-seasonally appropriate purchase you’ll thank me for this spring: a gorgeous, sexy linen top - to wear with your new Khaite skirt! Faithfull, $122 (was $175)
ALMINA CONCEPT
1: A very beautiful pair of new cream sweatpants to start the new year off fresh. $74 (was $98)
2: This sweater is on sale in a handful of colors, but I like this happy red best. $179 (was $238)
3: This ribbed cardigan is heaven. So slinky, and endlessly wearable. $119 (was $158)
4: And to go with your fresh new sweatpants, a crisp half zip sweatshirt. $81 (was $108)
DONNI
1: I have a couple of these long sleeved pointelle tees, and they’re great for layering under a knit in the winter, but also look cute with jeans in the spring. They’re an absolute classic, and a nice little twist on most long sleeve tees. $99 (was $124)
2: Silk striped slouchy PJ style pants….the dream. $325 (was $434)
3: And here’s the bright green velvet version! I’d wear these a ton I bet. $171 (was $342)
4: And!!!!! A wool/cashmere navy fisherman sweater! A very handy thing to own. $466 (was $518)
NET-A-PORTER
1: My beloved Dries tinsel wedges are (not surprisingly) on sale. This time in a copper/brown that’s way more wearable than my neon green. Dries van Noten, $477 (was $795)
2: Very beautiful jeans on sale from the new Chloé. I fucking love these. Chloé, $548 (was $1,095)
3: A gorgeous classic blazer from Helmut Lang, but with a nice little double collar detail. Helmut Lang, $373 (was $745)
4: How about a fresh swimsuit for spring! I love this one which is both striped, and ribbed. Solid & Striped, $95 (was $158)
1: Ok, this jacket is a lot of look, but isn’t it gorgeous??? If I still lived in New York I would 100% buy it for myself. Altuzarra, $1,957 (Was $2,795)
2: But how about these bright red, square toe Mary Janes from Bally?????? The ultimate!! Bally, $553 (was $790)
CO COLLECTION
1: A true thing of beauty - this kind of green kind of golden cotton knit short sleeve sweater. I would love to own this. $417 (was $695)
2: If you’re in the market for a new winter coat, this one is perfect. Menswear-inspired, structured, beautifully lined, and heavily discounted. $897 (was $1,495)
3: Co does the best leather, and I love everything about this cropped burgundy jacket. The color is gorgeous, the fit is exquisite (it has beautifully rounded sleeves that give it a kind of cocoon-y shape), it’s just so good. $1,137 (was $1,895)
1: Want a skirt to go with your new burgundy jacket? Here you go! $897 (was $1,495)
2: I gave up on jumpsuits awhile ago because I was annoyed by my own jumpsuit=y sassiness when I wore one. I felt exhausted by myself. This one, however, is more horny than silly. I love the blousey top, the tight waist, the wide leg - it’s all very titty in a way that I LOVE. $717 (was $1,195)
3: Ok, and now, this certainly isn’t cheap, but it is an amazing deal - this is a KILLER leather trench, the sexiest thing in the world, and heavily discounted - $1,797 (was $2,995)
RACHEL COMEY
1: The Rachel Comey sale is very fun, there are a lot of great essentials, like these taupe riding boots, as well as lots of oddball things that are emotional and irresistible. These boots, however, are a total no brainer. $417 (was $695)
2: These little silver kitten heels are very 90s in a way I love. A great alternative to a true heel if you have to get fancy. $285 (was $475)
3: But if a true heel is your thing…how about this lipstick red pair with a very interesting vamp? They’re sexy AND intellectual. $285 (was $475)
1: A gorgeous marled knit with kind of distressed detailing at the sides….a truly fabulous sweater. It makes me think of Old Céline. And! It’s cotton!!!!! $369 (was $615)
2: Of all the things I’m tempted to buy in this newlsetter, I’m most tempted by that sweater, and this waxed cotton jacket. The turned up cuffs kill me but not as much as the snap details on the cuffs kill me. I think this is the sharpest, most interesting coat I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s all so subtle, but so, so special. $705 (Was $1,175)
AND THAT’S ALL SHE (i) WROTE!
Your friend, forever and ever,
Laurel
Your first three books on the list are 3/4 of my top 4 books of the year! The 4th is God of the Woods... highly recommend!
‘It’s all very ‘titty’ in a way that I love”. So very good and on point!
