More Or Less The Only Accessory You Should Buy This Season
It takes one thing to feel current, and this is said thing.
I started this week thinking I was going to write about the question I posed in the Substack chat - I’m not sure what to call it. Basically, what are the things you’d save in a fire? It’s fun to think about, and if you haven’t added your two cents, please do. Basically I’m interested in - do you save your gold rolex or do you save the band tee your crush gave you your freshman year of college? How practical are we, really, vs how sentimental. Let me know.
But anyway, I was overcome with a different topic, and the kind of topic I never write about - a trend! - but it feels like we’re all so on the same wavelength with this one little saucy element, I can’t let it go. It’s such a minor thing, in the grand scheme of fashion, yet to me it signals 2023 style like no other single item.
It was always funny to me thinking about trends for magazines - like, how does everyone get so on the same page about something? How do we all tap into a collective current? One of the elements I found unappealing was the framing of trends like a complete vibe shift you had to undergo. But now, it seems that the collective ~we~ think about style so differently that rather than cohesive looks trending, it’s more about individual items. A polo neck sweater, for example, Sambas, or High Sport pants.
