MATERNITY JEANS

Both times I was pregnant, the only jeans I wore were an old pair of my husband’s, and eventually I used a hair elastic to keep them together. The trick does work, but I wanted jeans that I liked. At that time, pretty much the only maternity denim on the market were skinny. I hate skinny jeans, and I REALLY hated them when my ankles were swollen and I couldn’t stand the touch of anything on my skin. Now I’m noticing there are lots and lots of new options, in cuts I’d wear pregnant or not. Here are some of my favorites.

LEFT: Who knew Abercrombie & Fitch did maternity! Makes me feel old. Anyway, I like that these are over the belly, and baggy. They look comfy and also cool, and like I’d feel like myself wearing them. Perfect with a big cashmere sweater. They make 12 different versions, and not all of them are this cut, but the Baggy style is my favorite. Abercrombie & Fitch, $90

MIDDLE: These are also over the belly, and a straight cut with no distressing. They look great. Madewell, $158

RIGHT: Hatch also makes a boyfriend style, but I don’t like the washes they come in. This is their ankle crop, and it’s obviously not over-the-belly, but it has elastic inserts on the sides. I think these are better before you’re hugely pregnant - once that happens I wanted things that went over my bump (everything else just fell off), but I love the cut and wash of these and think they’ll also be essential for a few months after giving birth. Hatch, $198

THESE PANTS BOTH MY KIDS WEAR

My four-year-old daughter and six-year-old son both wear these corduroy pants from Oso & Me and both of them look so fucking cute in them, I can’t describe how or why but when they put them on I feel like I need to lay down they look so cute in them, I can’t handle it. They’re not babyish or overly grown up (I have a thing about not dressing kids like miniature adults….let them be kids!), they’re just sweet and comfy and perfect. They’re also designed to start off cuffed, then be worn uncuffed, so they “grow” with your kid. Brilliant. Oso & Me, $48
