How To Make Your Bed More Comfortable
Expert tips from My Fancy Mom
I mentioned this in this weekend’s letter, but we just bought a house and moved. Yay! As we’re getting all settled in, I’ve been leaning on My Fancy Mom for her expert recommendations. For those who don’t know about her yet, I have a Fancy Mom. She’s a lady of a certain age, and she has really beautiful taste. She understands that expensive doesn’t always mean exquisite (though sometimes it does), and that there is no greater luxury than a peaceful, functional home. You can read all the Fancy Mom posts here.
A few years ago, I spent the night in her bed while I was in Austin and I was absolutely blown away by how comfortable her bed is. The woman made a study of it, and carefully created the most heavenly bed known to humanity. Yesterday I was thinking I’d sure like a few extra of those down pillows she suggested, but I couldn’t remember what they were, so I dug up this post. And I thought since it had been a while, I might as well resend it here too, because it is just that good.
A few weeks ago I was in Austin for one night, and my mom wasn’t home, so she said rather than sleep in her guest house (like I usually do when I’m in town) I could stay in her bed. And all I can say….is the lady knows her shit. That stupid bed is like 900x better than any hotel I’ve ever stayed in, the sheets were so soft - it was like I was sleeping in what I imagined the white suede jacket in Can’t Buy Me Love felt like to wear. Like sleeping in a giant, chilled bowl of whipped cream wearing waterproof cashmere. Like being a baby bunny and sleeping against all your brother and sister bunnies. Like you lay down and say, Oh. Shit., and then you spend the rest of your life sleeping in beds trying to live up to that standard.
And knowing her, I knew how much thought went into making it that way. She works VERY VERY hard, exercises, gardens, cooks, is gorgeous and chic and FUN - the gal needs her sleep. Her recommendations are pretty simple, but she spent hours researching the hell out of this. She knows.
Here’s what she knows. Take it away, Mom!
Mattress Selection
“As for mattress selection, I would say - buy a reasonably good mattress and dress it well. That’s more important than nerding out on the mattress itself. You want a mattress that’s solid and stable, and doesn’t move around when your partner turns over. Everyone has personal preferences over material and firmness, which has more to do with your build than anything general. It’s very personal. But once you have your mattress, what’s important is getting it dressed well.
“It’s just like a wardrobe. First you need a foundation.
“That said, I recently slept at a friend’s and they had this one and it was great.”
[Ed note: We have this one and it’s fantastic - perfectly in the middle between soft and firm. I have back problems and this mattress really helps. My mom also slept in it one night with me, and she liked it.]
