As I was in New York this past week, there was one idea that kept coming up in my meetings and conversations - staying in your lane. Wearing blinders, not getting distracted, etc, etc, doing your thing, doing it well, and not worrying too much about what anyone else is up to.
Daniella Kallmeyer and I talked about it when we discussed her excellent brand. My agent and dearly beloved pal, Delphine Del Val and I spoke about it when it came to me being kind of a silly bitch, and on, and on, it was like This Trip Brought To You By The Letter M - For Mind Your Own Fucking Business.
The concept can be interpreted in a million different ways, but it’s something of a mantra for me lately, not overconsuming social media, not looky-loo’ing at what my peers are doing, just swimming in my own pond over here. I’ve written about that before.
But then I started thinking about my favorite style beacons, the people whose taste and personal thing I most admire, and they all have that quality. Sure, I love a chameleon, but what I really love is someone who knows what they like, and then just do that. So here, in what will maybe (probably) be a recurring thingie, I’m going to imagine the shopping lists of people with very specific and consistent style. They might not always be my style or the kinds of clothes I would always wear, but then again, my taste and style is so specific that it would become very very boring it if was always just about moi.
Today! My absolute favorite, my #1, the hottest bitch - Lauren Hutton. If you’ve read this for a while, or if you know me, you know how much I admire her. I love that she knows she’s hot, that she was the party dog to end all party dogs, that she’s funny, very tough, sexy, adventuresome, rascally. I just love her. I saw her the other day at Gjelina, and she hugged me and I cried. I wrote a cover story on her for InStyle once and I’ll never bring myself to delete those recordings.
Anyway, here I’m going to try and curate a little shopping list for Lauren Hutton, or for you, if you also love her style.
Here are just a few more:
Ok, so there are many things one will notice here - lots of denim! Lots of PANTS! Lots of smiling! Lots of teeth and mouth and hands! Lots, and lots to love. The main thing, is how unfussy it all is. It feels very natural - even that Oscars look with the Halston and the fur. She wears things she likes and sticks with them. But anyway, here we go.
Pants
Pants, pants, pants! Not a lot of novelty here, just great pants.
1. My Wranglers! I think she’d also like them. Perfect straight leg jeans, no stretch, no whiskering or distressing - and affordable. These are my all time favorite jeans. Wrangler, $55
2. These are great for her classic Levi’s 501 look, but you won’t have to go digging forever for an actual vintage pair. Everlane, $128
3. A very good, classic short. I like the pleat front here - they’d be cute with a vintage tee and cotton knit. Alex Mill, $135
4. I love these for her! And for me, ha! Madewell, $168
5. I see a lot of wide-leg pants in her world, I like the idea of these with some little white sneakers, a blazer, and a tee. Maria McManus, $720
6. These are superfine wool, and have the cut and shape, basically, of men’s Dickie’s. Really straightforward and cool, and while expensive, they’re wear-everywhere-and-forever. They remind me of my men’s Row pants, which I love. The Row, $1,250
Jackets
My girl loves a jacket! Denim, blazer, trench, fancy - check check check.
1. A very good, very classic denim jacket to wear with your jeans. Madewell, $138
2. I love this chore jacket. Great with denim, great with those Row pants, great pockets. Perfect. Alex Mill, $175
3. A great little shrunken navy blazer, another totally classic thing that says Hutton to me. J.Crew, $248
4. But then there’s also this navy blazer! Slightly longer, slightly slouchier, but both are excellent. This one maybe fits her vibe just a bit better. Raey, $845
5. A printed trench! When I ran into her the other day she had a very cool parka on. I can see her loving this one from Kallmeyer. Kallmeyer, $995
6. Finally, this is pretty silly - it’s 4k, but it’s so beautiful in person. The fabric is a dark chocolate brown, and the lapels are so glittery I can imagine her getting a kick out of this with denim and a camisole in the party days. And, this one is 40% off at checkout. So, still insane, but maybe slightly less insane? Khaite, $3,900
Tops
Americana tomboy tops! Tees, tanks, and button downs, nothing too romantic.
1. I think of her wearing a lot of satin - and something like this under a blazer with wide-leg pants? So good! Reformation, $98
2. Obviously we need a great denim shirt here. This one is excellent. The fit is divine, and it doesn’t have corny western references. Just very straightforward and nice. Sezane, $110
3. Not much to say here, just a very sweet little striped tee with kind of a 70s feel. La Ligne, $115
4. I love this little knit tank - I love that it’s basically see-through. I bet she’d like this.Doen, $178
5. Finally, a really special white button down made extremely sustainably. It has a gorgeous cocoon shaped back, and the cotton is super soft. Maria McManus, $450
Dresses
She’s not really such a dress gal, generally, but she does seem to occasionally enjoy a little knee length skirt or something. I mainly think of her in pants. Anyway, here are some I think would go with the vibe.
1. A very organic, comfy looking linen slip dress. Perfect for putting on after a swim. Everlane, $168
2. And here, truly excellent shirt dress! This can be worn a million ways, from sexy to kind of casual, to over pants in a more tomboy way. It’s a great dress - I have it in Black, but I like this yellow for her. Donni, $278
3. I can totally see her in Pleats Please, which makes me want to wear Pleats Please. I love this dress because it’s so interesting and unusual, with the pleats and the shape, but also so packable and practical. Pleats Please Issey Miyake, $344
4. I tried to find this picture forever, but there was one once of her in a satin slip, with Jellies, and it was such a good look. This is a skirt, rather than a dress, but definitely reminds me of her. Vince, $365
5. And now, here! The most beautiful dress of all time. More gown-like than anything, it’s so interesting and cool, and feels so natural and American Sportswear - it’s a dream. The Row, $1,590
Extras
She wears JELLIES! I forgot to add a baseball cap and a little bandana here, but these are very her IMO.
1. She truly wears Jellies! A lot! I love these, they’re made with hemp plastic. Plasticana, $64
2. Very cute little red ballet flats, to wear with jeans and a blazer and a baseball cap. Margaux, $225
3. I love these little white sneakers. More interesting than Converse, but every bit as practical. APC, $167
4. An upgrade from the Jellies, and probably more comfortable long-term. These are really the perfect fisherman sandal. The Row, $1,090
5. In almost every picture she’s wearing this little straw backpack. I’m sure it came from a trip somewhere, but here’s a little cutie pie leather version. She honestly has me almost convinced of a backpack. Bembien, $420
6. This isn’t similar to her backpack, but I can imagine her using something like this - or at least it looking good with all of her clothes. Sezane, $250
Ta-da! There she is, folks.
Lady of my heart, Lauren Hutton.
Love, your friend,
Laurel
Love this
I’ve been on the fence about the fisherman sandals for so long because the sole looks brutal. Are they comfortable?
